Tony has lived in Nyack for the last 20 plus years where he and his wife have raised their two now adult children. Before becoming a teacher Tony worked extensively in construction and renovation starting summers when he was 16 years old on Long Island where he grew up. While in college in New Jersey and Manhattan he put himself through school as a framer and art installer. After undergraduate college Tony worked as a fabricator and prototype manufacturer in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Hoboken building one of a kind objects and architectural details for artists, industrial designers, and architects. As a teacher in Harlem, Queens, and Westchester, Tony has enjoyed sharing the spirit of fulfillment in “making” with his students whether it's teaching painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, animation, architecture, or publication design. Tony says, “There is a thrill for students in creating something that they didn’t realize they could, and then sharing their efforts in thoughtful ways with classmates and the community”. Synthesizing his experiences as builder, figurative painter, graphic arts instructor, and outdoor enthusiast has brought him to the current direction in his work.
Inspired by a trip to Florence with my family, I sought a way to express my wonder of the scenic environment by means that encompass materials and techniques that I feel connected to. I am interested in light, shadow, atmosphere and the combination and juxtaposition of the natural and architectural in view around us. I push and pull at what is considered positive and negative space, and the ways in which unique flat shapes, as part of a whole, can create a discernible space. I’m enamored with flat painted color next to finished, polished wood grain and the considerations of surface quality that suggests. For my compositions I focus on the moments and places I am connected with and choose a color palette that speaks to those experiences.
