AJ Harrison is a painter who studied with various American artists including Arnold Mesches, Paul Brach, Mira Schorr, and British artists Paula Rego, Stuart Brisley, and John Hoyland. She has collaborated with Italian tech artist and architect Daniela Bertol as part of her Ideal Cities project. Harrison developed a style that alludes to sources as diverse as Pieter Brueghel, Giorgio de Chirico, and Samuel Beckett. Her still landscapes, with architectural ruins, lifeless lyrical trees, and scampering people refer to the world as a stage--a world where both acts of kindness and evil reign. Her latest work includes birds as witnesses. Using various media, her work seems as slick as a lithograph although it is made of layers and layers of acrylic media and chalk.
StatementI am an artist, art educator, and disability advocate. My work, in black and white, reflects on human behavior and how, despite the passage of time, people still do what they always have done--no matter how good or bad. Using everyman figures or animals as witnesses, in a barren landscape, I share scenes that are a translation of the questions that I ask myself about human interaction . Using mixed media, my paintings are built of many layers to reveal a resonant surface. I hope to deliver some gravity through my visual offerings. It is my intention to inspire thought in the viewer.
