Kigin Yang

Kigin Yang was born in South Korea and now lives and works in New York. She is particularly intrigued by microscopic images that imply the growth of nature. Her work is tenacious and meticulous, representing an ongoing investigation of the moment of "growing." Yang's artistic expressions vary from 2-dimensional drawings to 3-dimensional site-specific installations. She received funding from the GyeongGi Cultural Foundation as a rising artist and presented her work at Aram Art Museum in 2018. Additionally, she held her representative solo exhibition, "The Layers of Water," at Emu Art Space in South Korea in 2017. Her work has been featured and exhibited at various prestigious locations in New York, including the show “Making is Thinking” at the Painting Center at Chelsea (2022), as well as the show “I am belong here” at the Korean Cultural Center (2021).

Statement

" ‘What I can draw’ can be far richer and more specific than ‘What I know’ " is the primary premise for my creation. This attitude has affected not only interest in certain images, but also the way they are drawn. On the one hand, I am fascinated by the visual form of objects which imply irregular organic growth, in part due to my resistance to the rationalistic thinking that relies upon the elimination of ambiguity and subtlety. On the other hand, for me, drawing is not just a means to end but the end itself. My drawings are carried out in an unformatted and unpredictable manner through chance, openness and variability, which makes the relationship between individual features ambiguous. By watching this process of an object being assimilated into another, I have come to regard drawing as an accident that continues to grow and change, rather than having a single fixed message. I work under the assumption that this kind of unstructured drawing can reveal or extend new meanings: the process of drawing becomes a continual path of discovery. The drawn images are combined with other drawings in accordance with the flow of the image, and gradually become a single image. In the newly formed relationship, I find another world at the beginning, which leads to the next piece, and the aforementioned process is repeated continuously.
