MaryEllen Hendricks

MaryEllen Hendricks is a photographer living in Fairfield Connecticut. She received her BFA from Pratt Institute over 30 years ago. Since then, MaryEllen has been exploring various photographic processes in her art as well as working as a professional photographer. She has exhibited and won prizes in many group and one woman shows. In 2018 MaryEllen was Artist In Residence at Weir Farm National Historical Park. She has also been working on her “Thin Places Project” where she documents both in words and photography the personal stories of individuals who have places of peace and spirituality. MaryEllen’s passion is late 19th and early 20th Century large format photography. She has been experimenting with printing her landscapes, botanicals and portraits using alternative methods combining historic and modern technologies.

For many years I have been trying to capture on film expressions of the mystical or transcendent experience. I use primarily antique or otherwise primitive cameras and lenses that produce images that are pushed to their limits. The ways in which the images break down suggest a beyond that the viewer is invited to fill in for themselves.
