Out of Gas in Springs

Out of Gas in Springs
Oil Paint on a cradled panel.
While staying In Springs, Long Island, most mornings I'd head out around 5am and I would pass this disused gas station. It belongs to the iconic Springs General Store. The gas station part has been dis-used for many years.
One morning as I drove past, I noticed the gas pumps and lamps were lit up. This was before sunrise, but enough light to illuminate the sky. I reversed back up to see if I was mistaken. I was surprised to see lights on at all, since I knew the store is closed, awaiting refurbishment. A long time fan of Edward Hopper I knew of his painting 'Gas'. The scene reminded me of that, and so this a homage to him of sorts. I wanted to capture these old gas pumps and lamps illuminating the forecourt. One of the gas pumps has a plant growing through it and another was only half illuminated. I love the sense of old America in this scene, nostalgic and partially decayed. I don't know, it felt like those lights called out, and it was a scene I was meant to paint.
